In the beginning, before the world was shaped, the skies stretched vast and empty, and the seas churned without form. Obatala, the gentle and wise Orisha, was chosen by Olodumare to descend and bring order to chaos. He was given a golden chain to climb down from the heavens, a gourd of sand, and a white hen to shape the earth. As he prepared for his sacred mission, Obatala’s heart swelled with pride. The world-to-be rested in his hands, and with each step toward the edge of the heavens, he envisioned lush lands, flowing rivers, and creatures teeming with life. But the task was weighty, and Obatala sought comfort in palm wine offered by mischievous spirits. The sweet, heady drink clouded his mind, and his steps faltered as he descended the golden chain. When he reached the chaos below, his hands moved sluggishly. The sand poured unevenly, and the hen scratched haphazardly, scattering landforms across the waters.
